After years of owning local businesses in the area, Elie Damouni and his brothers, George and Kareem, decided they wanted to pursue their passion.

“We were looking for a little farm where we could grow grapes and make a little wine,” says Damouni. “But in Genesee County, we couldn’t grow those grapes, so we changed it to an apple orchard.”

Growing up on a farm in their village in Lebanon, the brothers wanted to create something similar here – something they could work on during evenings and weekends. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Damouni and his family planted 10,000 trees on a plot of land they purchased in Mundy Township. They added another 8,000 trees in both 2021 and 2022. Once the trees matured, they decided to open their orchard to the public.

The first year, they offered u-pick apples. Then they added a bar to sell hard cider and wine made on-site. The next year, they added pumpkins, mums, and donuts. Each year, their passion project has continued to grow into a full-fledged business.

“If everything goes to plan, one day we can start making some money (laughs),” says Damouni. “We’ve been successful in our other businesses; this is what we can do for fun and contribute to the community with affordable prices.”

Damouni notes that they keep their prices low to make the orchard accessible to everyone.

“This started as something for fun, and now it’s a lot of work,” says Damouni. “But it’s still fun!”

What is your favorite memory so far?

Seeing the trees grow for the first time. When they bloom, they all have white flowers and it’s like you’re in heaven.

Why did you decide to open in Genesee County?

We live in Genesee County and wanted something close to home that we could go to in the afternoon after work. Our entire family is involved with the orchard, too.

How would you describe Flint & Genesee to an outsider?

I love the community. We know a lot of people, and they always know someone we’re connected with.

Why did you join the Flint & Genesee Chamber?

Because of the exposure they give you, the welcome that they give you, and the help.

What advice would you offer other business owners or entrepreneurs?

I tell people that America is a place where anyone can start a business. Maybe the first two or three years are hard, but you stay determined to become successful. And you become successful the more time you put into the business. You become the American dream. Every person has what it takes to be a successful businessperson. Take your time, start small, and you can grow from there.
